What is Entra ID, and why back it up?
Microsoft Entra ID (formerly Azure Active Directory) is the identity backbone of Microsoft 365. It controls who can sign in and what they can access: users, groups, roles, app registrations, conditional access policies, and the configuration that ties your whole tenant together.
That makes it a prime target. Attackers increasingly go after identities rather than data - because compromising Entra ID means compromising everything behind it. And it’s not just attacks: an accidental deletion, a misconfigured policy, or a malicious insider can lock your organisation out of its own tenant or quietly open doors that should stay closed.
Microsoft’s native recovery options for Entra ID are limited. Deleted objects are only recoverable for a short window, many configuration objects aren’t recoverable at all, and relationships between objects - group memberships, role assignments, app permissions - are easy to lose in a partial restore.
